Ian Somerhalder has "zero idea" if Nina Dobrev is returning to The Vampire Diaries

"I want the audience to be happy," he teases.

Don't bother asking The Vampire Diaries star and producer Ian Somerhalder if the show is bringing back Nina Dobrev for its series finale.

Ever since The CW revealed that this will be the swansong for its long-running hit, fans have been clamouring for Dobrev to reprise her role as Elena Gilbert one last time.

Somerhalder seems like someone who'd be 'in the know' since he's Vampire Diaries' leading man and formed one-half of the show's most enduring couple with Dobrev - but he's apparently as clueless as you are.

"I have zero idea [if she'll be back]," he told Variety. "As a producer, I do have a lot of information and then there's a lot of information I don't have.

"I want the audience to be happy, but I also am very pro human. I don't think these guys should have the ability to wreak havoc, kill everybody, ruin the lives of so many and then get out with a happy ending. I think the happy ending is that we got to go on this amazing ride with these two guys. They've lived long enough."

For some reason, we think Ian might be playing coy on this one - much like Dobrev herself when she was recently asked about a Vampire Diaries comeback.

"That's a very very good question, you should ask the producers, you should ask the powers that be above," she would only say on the American Music Awards red carpet.

Last month, The Vampire Diaries producer Julie Plec told Digital Spy that she was indeed trying to make at least a cameo from Nina Dobrev happen at some point this season.

"She's said she would [come back] and I want her to," Plec told us. "So honestly it becomes a matter of logistics and if we become victim to logistics, then that would be devastating. I'm hoping that's not even going to be an issue."

Heaven forbid such a 'logistics issue' prevented Dobrev from coming back, there's at least still hope of seeing Elena Gilbert (and any other Vampire Diaries character) pop up in spinoff The Originals at some point in the future.

"I'd like to keep that show going and let anybody from The Vampire Diaries that wanted to drop over and visit, come over and play in that sandbox," Plec teased. "I know a lot of us are very committed to keeping The Originals around."

The Vampire Diaries airs on The CW in the US and ITV2 in the UK.
