We finally learned the back story for The Vampire Diaries' huge new villain, sexy siren Sybil (Nathalie Kelley)—and
it turns out that not only is she not working alone, she's actually the
LESSER of two evils. The real mastermind? Her sister, Seline (Kristen Gutoskie)—a.k.a. the sweet babysitter who's been taking care of Alaric (Matt Davis) and Caroline's (Candice King) twins.
But unfortunately, Stefan (Paul Wesley)
has had his memory of the revelation wiped out—so the audience knows
what incredible danger everyone's in, but no one else does. Gutoskie
tells E! News that Seline will use that ignorance to her advantage in an
attempt to get closer to the supernaturally gifted children.
"In
the next episode I think her focus is on the twins and I think their
power is something that is very interesting to her," she says. "I think
she can see some of herself and her sister in the twins being powerful,
young sisters who are kind of outcasts essentially. I think that you'll
definitely see her finding more of an interest in them. Then just a
little bit of love/hate with her sister, you'll definitely see some of
that."
We saw that love/hate relationship in the telling of their
origin story, which leads us to wonder if Sybil could potentially be
convinced to betray her sister and join the side of our Mystic Falls
heroes. There's a chance, Gutoskie says.
The CW
"I
think with every sibling rivalry there's potential for both. I think it
is definitely possible that Sybil could turn the table on Seline," she
says. "You have a loyalty to each other having been bound for thousands
of years together, but they definitely have a lot resentment and being
paired together doing evil acts for that many years is probably going to
create some sort of build up. They are very influenced by their evil
acts. If you're serving the devil for that many years, as good as you
can be underneath I think you get really used to the betrayal and
dishonesty. I think there's potential for Sybil definitely to turn the
tables—or maybe at the end of the day her sister is more important. I
think both potential things could happen!"
This is TVD,
so clearly the group will find out Seline's true identity
eventually—and that'll be terrifying for them. "I definitely think
Caroline and Alaric have a lot to fear when they find that out,"
Gutoskie says. "Sybil being so powerful, and because her powers trump
vampire power, I think everyone has a lot to fear. Once they find out I
think it kind of throws things into a bit of chaos, and it definitely
throws everybody off and they have to go at another way to figure out
how to stop these [sirens]."
The CW
Things
will also be kind of awkward considering it's clear there's a spark
between Seline and Alaric—and something very well may happen there
sometime soon. "I mean, he's a handsome dude and a good guy, why
wouldn't she be into it," jokes Gutoskie. "I think Alaric and her have
chemistry and I think there's definitely something appealing to her
about him, because being an outcast and cast away to this island away
from her family—to see this man take care of his family and be a really
good outstanding human, I think there's something about that that really
draws Seline, her more compassionate and human side, to him."
But
Alaric probably won't be into it once he finds out that she's an evil
siren who's after his daughters. "You never know! We'll see," Gutoskie
teases. "If he's into it when he finds out who she really is, will he
accept all of Seline? I don't know."
