What would a final season be without Elena?
The Vampire Diaries definitely wants to go out with a bite by bringing back Nina Dobrev.
That's right, The CW is in active negotiations with Nina Dobrev for her to return as The Vampire Diaries' cursed heroine Elena Gilbert in the final season.
"There are discussions going on with Nina," CW boss Mark Pedowitz told reporters at the TCA press tour today (August 11). "She was integral to The Vampire Diaries.
"Hopefully it will work out - but, should it not, [creator Julie Plec] has planned a great series finale for fans."
Dobrev said goodbue to The Vampire Diaries at the end of its sixth season in a poignant sendoff for Elena.
However, CW president Mark Pedowitz hinted at a Dobrev comeback even before the dust had settled on her departure.
"We would have loved Nina to stay," Pedowitz said at last year's TCA press tour. "She did a great job for the six years she was on the show and she's welcome anytime she wants to come back."
As for what else is being planned for The Vampire Diaries' eighth and final run, creator Julie Plec teased that the "actual last sequence is pretty written in [her] head".
"Ever since Nina said goodbye, I've had a pretty clear ending in my head, which thankfully works wherever I put it," Plec said this past spring.
The Vampire Diaries returns on October 21 on The CW in the US. ITV2 airs the series in the UK.
