There are no plans to wrap up the spin-off series, which launched in 2013.
The Vampire Diaries might be ending - but that doesn't mean you've seen the last of your favourite characters.
Julie Plec, showrunner on both that show and The Originals, confirmed to Digital Spy that anyone who survives VD's final season could reappear on the spin-off.
"In fact, there was a character that I was thinking about killing [on Vampire Diaries] and I reconsidered because they could have a life on the other show," she said.
Plec told us that she has "bittersweet parting feelings" about wrapping up The Vampire Diaries after eight seasons - and that she thinks The Originals (launching its fourth season in 2017) can run "for another couple years".
"I'd like to keep that show going and let anybody from The Vampire Diaries that wanted to drop over and visit, come over and play in that sandbox," she said. "I know a lot of us are very committed to keeping The Originals around."
Plec wouldn't rule out the possibility of a third series set in the Vampire Diaries universe, either - especially now that the flagship is departing.
"The network has always said, 'If you ever have an idea for another spin-off, all you have to do is call' and I think about it all the time," she revealed. "If something organically appears to my creative brain that feels like it could work, I would absolutely do that.
"It's a universe that's been so rich and fun to play in, so if I could think of a reason to keep playing in it, I would love to."
